How should a US vacation-rental host choose a smart lock?

Match the exact lock to the door, backup entry, network and reservation workflow before comparing hardware and automation costs.

By STR Compare Editorial team · Research checked October 2, 2026

The short answer

For a 1–10-property host, start with the exact door and model, then confirm how reservation codes reach that lock and how entry works when power or connectivity fails. Encode BE489, Standard Assure Lock 2 and Deadbolt Go have different network, backup and code-management conditions. Lynx and PointCentral are software choices with separate hardware and onboarding decisions. PointCentral is a growth option: OwnerRez reports a 15-property new-customer minimum with an existing-customer exception and a policy-change warning. No option here was physically tested.

Start with the door and the exact model

Encode means the BE489 deadbolt here; Plus, Connect and Lever are separate products. Its preparation document calls for checking door thickness, backset, bore holes and jamb, but corrupted fraction text prevents verified numeric dimensions in this research. A separately obtained thick-door kit is described, with current price unconfirmed.

For Yale Standard Assure Lock 2, YRD410/420 are keyed and YRD430/450 key-free. The shop’s selected SKU and static specifications disagree, so the displayed $279.99 Standard touchscreen Wi-Fi price does not establish a resolved key configuration. Touch and Plus features are separate. Yale’s malformed door-thickness text also leaves exact numeric fit unresolved here.

Go’s US listing specifies a 1⅜–2 inch swing door, 2⅛ inch bore and 2⅜ or 2¾ inch backset. It advises partially sheltered installation; continuous wet-weather exposure can shorten lifespan. Those are vendor specifications, not a field-tested fit or durability result.

Separate local entry from remote control

Encode uses built-in Wi-Fi without an additional remote-access accessory, but remote actions still need internet and a powered usable lock. Four AA alkaline batteries power local touchscreen operation.

Assure Lock 2 needs a compatible Wi-Fi module or Connect Bridge for remote control; Bluetooth-only use is nearby. Keyed models have mechanical-key fallback, while named key-free models accept temporary 9 V power to enter a valid code. Battery-life estimates vary with configuration, usage, friction and network conditions.

Go uses four AA alkaline batteries and Type-C emergency power, with mechanical-key entry also listed. Offline algoPIN generation does not provide remote unlocking. A remote-function Bridge needs power, internet, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth proximity; the US store displays it separately at $83.99 USD.

Confirm the reservation route and its limits

Native Airbnb setup and PMS-mediated automation are separate routes. Airbnb’s native connection is limited to eligible US/Canada hosts and one compatible lock per listing, with current firmware and Wi-Fi setup. Its supported models include Encode and Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi.

OwnerRez documents direct Encode support through Schlage v2 API, authorized mapping, consistent timezones and code lengths. One Schlage account cannot connect to multiple OwnerRez accounts; an OwnerRez subscription and its separate lock-integration charge apply.

Lynx lists OwnerRez, Lodgify and Hospitable, while Beds24, Smoobu and Rentals United are marked Coming Soon. Its Guesty page does not specify Guesty Lite eligibility. Exact model, module, plan and workflow matter more than a provider logo.

Go’s dated API list names DBX1/DBX2 algoPIN support, but its current exact PMS eligibility remains unconfirmed. OwnerRez’s igloohome model list omits Go and is non-exhaustive, so it proves neither compatibility nor incompatibility. The older vendor Airbnb Connect article is separate from Airbnb’s native hardware connection; its free-trial statement does not establish current free automation.

Account for firmware, first-use and deletion restrictions

Yale’s Assure Lock 2 notice reports that temporary codes managed through Yale Access may stop before their scheduled end. Its documented remedy checks lock firmware 1.3.16, updates older firmware locally over Bluetooth, and adjusts existing temporary-code end times by one minute. This notice concerns Assure Lock 2 YRD410/420/430/450 and temporary codes managed in Yale Access, not every PMS or lock. Older firmware updating requires an owner within Bluetooth range; existing codes also require the documented adjustment. When local updating is unavailable, Yale advises temporarily disconnecting its native Airbnb integration, removing temporary reservation codes and using manually created Always codes before check-in, deleted after checkout, until updated. Always codes are not time-limited. This is a vendor remedy, not proof all failures are resolved.

algoPIN can generate codes without a live lock connection for paired supported devices. Duration codes lasting more than 24 hours require first use within their first 24 hours. Codes created with a start more than 256 hours ahead cannot be deleted; the whitelist/blacklist limit is 199 PIN codes. The lock still needs power, pairing and compatible hardware. Offline generation is different from remote unlocking or immediate remote revocation; first-use and future-deletion restrictions remain material.

A previously stored guest code retains its activation/expiry when a usable lock is offline; backup codes do not expire until deleted after the trip when connectivity returns. Backup codes require a powered usable lock and remain non-expiring until removed. Dead batteries or broken keypads require a separate entry method; PMS backup workflows can differ.

Compare the lock purchase and recurring services separately

Encode trim cards start at $299, distinct from the page’s $399 comparison MSRP and any installed total. The app is free; OwnerRez lists an additional $4 per lock/month alongside its base subscription.

Yale’s $279.99 Standard touchscreen Wi-Fi shop display has unresolved selected/static SKU details. Connect Bridge bundles, Touch and Plus are separate configurations; taxes, installation and services are not established as included.

Go displays $139.99 USD hardware and $83.99 USD Bridge. Its global API/integration page starts at $2 per active connected lock/month without an explicit ISO currency; provider eligibility, billing route and other partner charges remain unconfirmed. Historical prepaid-slot terms do not establish current postpaid terms.

Lynx requires a proposal covering modules, minimums, commitment, hardware and onboarding. PointCentral identifies setup and ongoing fees without a verified numeric total; current eligibility for a new small portfolio needs confirmation in light of OwnerRez’s reported 15-property minimum. These amounts are price bases, not comparable all-in invoices.

Common questions

Is offline code generation the same as remote revocation?

No. Go can generate algoPINs without a live lock connection for paired supported devices, but first-use and future-deletion restrictions remain. Lynx’s locally retained issued codes also do not assure pending offline changes or revocation. Powered hardware is still necessary.

Can a five-property operator assume PointCentral will accept new onboarding?

OwnerRez reports a 15-property minimum for new customers, exempts existing customers and warns the policy may have changed. Current PointCentral confirmation is needed; this is growth-option coverage rather than a default small-portfolio recommendation.
