Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt
Model: Encode BE489 / BE489WB deadbolt; separate from Encode Plus, Connect and Lever
Encode BE489 is a Wi-Fi deadbolt with local stored-code access and separate native Airbnb or PMS automation routes. Official trim cards start at $299; this is distinct from the $399 comparison MSRP and excludes installation and services. Remote changes need connectivity and power; previously stored codes need a usable powered lock.

About Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt
This profile covers the Encode BE489 deadbolt. It uses built-in Wi-Fi and Schlage Home without an additional remote-access accessory; Plus, Connect and Lever are separate products. Remote access still depends on property Wi-Fi, internet and lock power. A free manufacturer app does not make every PMS integration free.
Door preparation before purchase
The BE489 door-preparation document requires checking door thickness, backset, bore holes and jamb; it describes a separately obtained thick-door kit. Fraction glyphs are corrupt in the extracted PDF, so exact numeric dimensions remain unverified in this research. The thick-door kit’s current price is unconfirmed.
Battery power and local access
Encode uses four AA alkaline batteries, with low/critical battery indicators and local touchscreen code operation. A powered usable lock is still necessary. Local battery operation does not make remote commands available when the router or internet connection fails.
Temporary codes and separate cleaner access
The free iOS/Android app offers recurring/temporary codes, event history and multiple-home dashboard/map views. A free manufacturer app does not establish free PMS automation or included hardware.
Schlage describes timed code/virtual-key scheduling and separate cleaner access for its rental lock range. The family page also covers Plus and Lever products. Their model features and prices do not automatically apply to BE489.
Native Airbnb backup access
A previously stored guest code retains its activation/expiry when a usable lock is offline; backup codes do not expire until deleted after the trip when connectivity returns. Backup codes require a powered usable lock and remain non-expiring until removed. Dead batteries or broken keypads require a separate entry method; PMS backup workflows can differ.
Connections and setup
Native Airbnb connection
Schlage lists Airbnb guest-code automation and OwnerRez integration for Encode. Eligibility, setup and additional partner charges depend on the chosen provider and route.
Eligible US/Canada hosts can connect one compatible lock per listing; supported models include Encode and Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi; reservation codes require current firmware and Wi-Fi setup. Eligible US/Canada hosts can use one compatible lock per listing. Direct native Airbnb setup is separate from PMS-mediated sharing and needs current firmware, connectivity and a backup entry route.
OwnerRez direct integration
OwnerRez directly supports Encode Wi-Fi locks on Schlage v2 API; codes are saved locally, retries notify after five failures; timezones and code lengths must be consistent. Setup requires a free Schlage account/app, authorized mapping and an OwnerRez subscription. One Schlage account cannot be connected to multiple OwnerRez accounts; code-length and timezone constraints remain material.
OwnerRez lists Schlage direct integration at $4 per lock per month. This is OwnerRez’s integration charge in addition to its base subscription and hardware, rather than a universal manufacturer subscription.

Common questions
Will a stored guest code work if property internet fails?
Airbnb says a previously stored code keeps its activation and expiry on a usable powered lock. That does not make remote commands or newly pending changes available during an outage. Dead batteries or a broken keypad require another entry route.
Is the OwnerRez integration included in the free app?
No. OwnerRez lists $4 per lock/month in addition to its base subscription and the hardware. Setup uses an authorized Schlage account and mapped locks; code-length, timezone and account-sharing constraints apply.
