The short answer
These terms describe different jobs. A PMS organizes rental operations; channel management exchanges supported information with booking sites; an iCal feed is a calendar exchange. Check the actual fields, direction, and timing of each connection.
Who this is for: Hosts adding another booking channel or comparing software integration claims.
What to take away
- A channel logo does not explain the connection’s scope.
- Check availability, prices, restrictions, content, and messages separately.
- Give each type of information a clear place to edit it.
Start with the job, not the acronym
Use three questions to keep the categories clear. Where will the team organize reservation work? How will information move to and from booking sites? What will a particular connection actually exchange? A product may cover several jobs, but its label does not remove the need to ask all three.
OwnerRez’s channel-management overview describes rates and listing information as well as availability. That is broader than simply exchanging a calendar. It is an example of documented capabilities, not proof that every connection offers the same scope.

What to check with a calendar feed
Airbnb accepts imported calendar URLs ending in .ics. Its documentation says imported calendars refresh every three hours, with a manual refresh option. It also warns that some dates blocked elsewhere may not carry over, including certain preparation or advance-notice blocks.
Those details belong to Airbnb’s importer. Do not reuse that timing as a universal iCal specification. For your own setup, inspect a booked stay and a deliberate owner block separately. Check the destination calendar after the source changes, and document what you expect to happen between refreshes.

Why the exact connection matters
Hospitable documents different capabilities for Vrbo Partner and Vrbo Legacy connections. In that documentation, Legacy has calendar synchronization but not listing-content management. Legacy calendar data can include nightly pricing, so it should not be treated as another name for iCal.
The practical lesson is to identify the connection itself before judging a feature. Ask the provider to confirm the connection type available for your account and property, the direction of each supported update, and the exceptions. Save the answer alongside your setup notes.

Build a field-by-field comparison sheet
Create one row per channel, then break it into the information that matters to you. Do not accept one undifferentiated “syncs with Airbnb” answer. For each field, record whether the software sends it, receives it, or leaves it for you to manage elsewhere.
Include a column for the place your team should make edits. Two people changing the same value in different systems is a process problem even when the connection works exactly as documented.
- Availability: booked nights, owner blocks, and preparation gaps.
- Pricing and restrictions: nightly rates, minimum stays, and arrival rules.
- Listing content: descriptions, amenities, photos, and fees.
- Operations: reservation updates, messages, cancellations, and error alerts.
Test a change from end to end
With a vendor-supported test method, change one allowed setting and verify the destination result. Avoid creating fake paid bookings or altering real guest stays just to run a test. Check where the system shows success, pending updates, and failures.
Write down the expected handling of a disconnected channel and who will notice. A successful connection screen is a starting point; your acceptance check should show that the specific information you rely on arrives in the right place. Repeat the check when changing connection types or adding a channel.
Common questions
Does API integration mean everything is instant?
No such assumption should drive your setup. Ask for the supported fields, update behavior, known limitations, and failure handling for the exact connection.
Can I use a PMS and a separate channel manager?
Evaluate the supported architecture with both providers. Define which system owns each setting before connecting overlapping tools.
